Forming part of a series on rural people residing in the low mountain region of Westerwald, Young Farmers (Jungbauern) was taken by Sander in 1914, shortly before he joined the medical corps at the outbreak of the first World War. August Sander eventually became one of the partners and later the studio’s sole proprietor by 1904. In the same year, at the Paris Exposition, Sander was given the Cross of Honor and a gold medal. During this time, he experimented using color in photography and this work was taken by the Leipzig Museum.

He moved to a suburb of Cologne in 1909 and soon began to photograph the rural farmers nearby. August Sander was born in Herdorf, a small rural village east of Cologne, in 1876. He was one of nine children of a peasant and miner family.

During military service, August Sander was an assistant in a photographic studio in Trier; he then spent the following two years working in various studios elsewhere. By 1904 he had opened his own studio in Linz, Austria, where he met with success.
